Something is always going on at Bethel! Part of that is because there are many community and support groups that meet here.
Nokomis Healthy Seniors
The mission of Nokomis Healthy Seniors Program is to enhance the lives of our community’s elders by helping them continue to live independently in their own homes. Their services are tailored to each individual senior and may include: a volunteer program to provide transportation to medical appointments utilizing a network of volunteers as well as neighborhood volunteers; help with small fix-it jobs around the house; service coordinators to help seniors access other existing services; ‘Nurse is In’ drop-in clinic once a week; monthly health education seminars for interested seniors; and nursing staff to conduct community health clinics and provide home health services such as bathing or medication set-up.
Bancroft Neighborhood Association
BNA has it’s office here at Bethel and they hold regular committee meetings as well as their annual meeting here.
CoAM Life Enrichment
Cooperative Adult Ministries (CoAM) is a program of TRUST, an interfaith coalition of south Minneapolis congregations serving families, youth, and seniors since 1970. The CoAM Life Enrichment classes are held at Bethel on Mondays in the fall and spring. Various speakers talk on a wide range of topics covering history, politics, faith, travel, health, and local issues. Call the CoAM office for details on upcoming classes and other events: 612-721-5786.
Boy Scouts & Cub Scouts
We have one Boy Scout troop and four to five Cub Scout packs that meet here every week during the school year. The Cub Scouts help plan and put on the annual Community Halloween Party, and the Boy Scouts sell wreaths at the Annual Holiday Bazaar.
Nokomis Quilters
This group of quilters has been meeting since 2005. They share their own projects and they work on projects to donate. They have made many, many quilts for the Veteran's Administration Hospital, Camp Knutson, and St. Joseph's Home for Children. Anyone is welcome to join them; they meet the second and fourth Thursday each month from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, usually in rooms 9-10.
La Conexion de las Americas
La Conexion merged with the Resource Center for the Americas in February 2011 to become an organization of both advocacy and direct service to our Latino neighbors. This collaboration will allow both organizations to be much more effective in empowering Latino families in a wide variety of ways. In combining these organizations, there is now a staff of six full-time bilingual professionals offering ten programs that deal with many of the needs in the Latino community in the Twin Cities. Bethel supports this organization and one of our members is on the board.
Support Groups
There are a number of support groups that meet at Bethel every week:
AA Amigos II (Alcoholics Anonymous) meets on Saturdays at 9am. (Note: this is a closed group)
Debtors Anonymous meets on Saturdays at 9am.
Overeaters Anonymous meets on Tuesays at 9:30am.
el Colegio Charter School also uses our hall for gym class from time to time; and folks living in this neighborhood come here for voting. There is always something going on!
