Music Ministry Positions available at Bethel Lutheran Church, South Minneapolis

About the positions:

These three positions are offered individually or in combination in accordance with the skill set of the applicant. Please be clear as to which position(s) interest you.

 

 

Music Ministry Coordinator (5-7 hours per week)

 

The Music Ministry Coordinator helps develop and lead the worship music ministry for the church, in consultation with the pastor and other team members, in a way that is consistent with the mission, values, and theology of the church community.

 

  • Plan and coordinate music for Sunday and other services, including Ash Wednesday, mid-week Lenten worship services, Blue Christmas, Christmas Eve and/or Christmas Day, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Thanksgiving Eve and the like.

  • Schedule ensembles for worship services.

  • Work with the Worship & Music Committee and the Pastor in choosing music related to the liturgical season and scripture readings.

  • Be familiar with Lutheran traditions and teachings. We are part of the ELCA and an RIC congregation.

  • Be familiar with a variety of sung liturgies.

  • With assistance from the Worship & Music Committee and office staff, recruit instrumentalists for rehearsals and worship services in collaboration with staff members and volunteers.

  • Communicate with the Bethel community through bulletins, monthly newsletters, and social media.

  • Develop and manage the annual music budget.

  • Report and obtain permissions for all music usage to the appropriate copyright holders.

  • Attend weekly staff meetings.

  • Schedule cantors to sing in weekly worship.

  • Oversee regular tunings and maintenance of Bethel’s 42-rank Schlicker pipe organ and seven pianos.

  • Manage music libraries, adding new music as budgets will allow. Music should be chosen from a variety of backgrounds.

  • Arrange for musicians at weddings and funerals when requested.

  • Serve as contact and assist in scheduling/hosting music groups/ensembles requesting to use our space for rehearsal or concert.

  • Periodically enhance professional and liturgical education through reading, workshops, conferences, private study, etc., as allowed by the budget and approval of the Worship & Music Committee.

 

 

Musician (12-15 hours per week)

 

The musician helps develop and lead the worship music ministry for worship services, in consultation with the pastor and other team members, in a way that is consistent with the mission, values, and theology of the church community. It is important that the Bethel musician knows the distinction between performing music and leading congregational songs.

  • Accompany congregational singing and liturgist with organ, piano, and/or other instruments.

  • Prepare and perform preludes, postludes, music during the offering (when necessary), etc. for the services mentioned above.

  • As needed, coordinate with Director of Ensembles regarding accompanying ensembles.

  • Research and utilize creative materials to enhance the worship experience.

  • Maintain personal, professional competence through regular music practice.

  • Periodically enhance professional and liturgical education through reading, workshops, conferences, private study, etc. as allowed by the budget and approval of the Worship & Music Committee.

  • Be familiar with a variety of sung liturgies.

  • Coordinate instrument maintenance with the Music Ministry Coordinator.

  • The musician has right of first refusal for all funerals and weddings.

  • Arrange for qualified substitute musician when gone.

Director of Ensembles (5-7 hours per week)

 

The director of ensembles helps develop and lead the worship music ministry for the church, in consultation with the pastor and other team members, in a way that is consistent with the mission, values, and theology of the church community.

 

  • Plan the music for and direct the small Bethel Choir, Bethel Handbell Choir and small groups to assist in leading worship.

  • Lead inspiring, well-organized rehearsals each week during the regular choir and handbell season.

  • As needed, coordinate with the Musician regarding accompanying ensembles.

  • Recruit musicians for Bethel ensembles.

  • Periodically enhance professional and liturgical education through reading, workshops, conferences, private study, etc. as allowed by the budget and approval of the Worship & Music Committee.

  • Be familiar with a variety of sung liturgies.

  • Arrange for qualified substitute director when gone.

  • Coordinate instrument maintenance with the Music Ministry Coordinator.
